The Red Sox gave Yankees closer Mariano Rivera the most elaborate sendoff yet.

“Nader and his sports reform project “League of Fans” just put the finishing touches on an open letter and petition (posted last Friday) imploring Nader’s beloved New York Yankees’ relief pitcher Mariano Rivera to forego his plans to retire and play one more season.

"This is for all fans to sign, though. Not just Yankee fans," he tells me. "Just give us one more year! I mean, how many superior players have retired in the top of their form? Ted Williams — near the top. He was about .290 [batting average]… But most of them retire — Babe Ruth and all the rest — in rather serious decline. John Sterling said the other day that he thinks [Rivera] may be not only as good as he’s ever been, but he may be better."”
