
ESPN is laying off a portion of its staff today, a network spokesman confirms to us. How many? ESPN won’t say. A tipster told us earlier today that it would be more than 400 staffers. A source at ESPN said that number is a little high, but it appears to be in the hundreds.

Yankees, Giants and Jets all make Forbes’ top-10 of most valuable franchises in professional sports
Six of the ten most valuable franchises in sports play American football, according to a list issued by Forbes, and two of them play in the same yet-to-be-sponsored stadium.
The Giants were ranked eighth, and the Jets, co-owners of the New Meadowlands Stadium, checked in at No. 10. Both earned their way among the world’s top 50, trailing only the Yankees in the tri-state area. The Giants were tagged as worth $1.18 billion while the Jets weighed in at $1.14 billion.
Only one baseball team was able cement its status in the top-10: The Yankees. The Bronx Bombers checked in at No. 3 on the list with a value of $1.7 billion.

The New York Times Co. said it has sold more than half its holdings in the Fenway Sports Group, which includes the Boston Red Sox, for $117 million.
Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reports that the Jets and Giants are getting closer to selling the rights, and that a new name could be applied to the New Meadowlands Stadium before the start of the 2011 season. If, of course, there even is a 2011 season.
