God is coming to Queens.

God’s Gift Achiuwa, a 6-foot-8 power forward originally from Port Harcourt, River States, Nigeria, will announce his plans to play for St. John’s on a 2:45 p.m. conference call.

Achiuwa was born in Nigeria, which helps explains his unique name.

“Nigeria is a very, very religious country,” said Joe Boncore, who mentors numerous Nigerian players but has no connection to Achiuwa. “They are devout Catholics. You gotta have religion because where they’re coming from, it’s pretty bad.”

It was easy to forget that what St. John’s did across so much of this  season was exceed expectations, overachieving and taking advantage of  teams that had grown careless taking them for granted.
“But that,” coach Steve Lavin said  when Gonzaga 86, St. John’s 71 was complete, “is as good a team as  we’ve seen on film all year. And they were awfully good tonight.”
